English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Do you want to improve your English?

Welcome to English for Speakers of Other Languages. At ACRES you will find:

 small and friendly classes
 experienced and helpful tutors
 a variety of courses at different ESOL levels.

What is ESOL?
ESOL is for people living in the UK who do not have English as a first language. It provides preparation for further ESOL or mainstream study and/or employment. ESOL can be studied at different levels from Entry Level 1 (Beginners) to Level 2 (Advanced)

What does it involve?
Students will study all the ESOL skills - speaking/listening/reading and writing. ESOL is designed to help students with everyday life, work or study. All courses are part funded by the UK government and therefore regular attendance and the ability to complete the course are essential.

Are there exams?
Yes. Every class will work towards a City & Guilds ESOL exam. These are nationally recognised qualifications in the UK. Students will be given the opportunity to sit one exam in either speaking and listening, reading or writing.

Can I study Citizenship in Entry Level ESOL classes?
Yes. All Entry Level classes will include citizenship from September 2008.

How much will it cost?
You can study English for around £2.95 per hour. Course costs will vary depending on the length of your course but an average course of 90¾ hours will cost approximately £265 which includes exam and assessment fees. The cost of the course will be confirmed once a place has been allocated on the most suitable course for you.

Concessionary rates are available for those who qualify under the ACRES concessionary fees policy.

At the time of going to print, students enrolling on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses have to pay tuition fees unless they are eligible for fee remission, when they would only need to pay the examination costs. There are funds available to help with course fees in some cases. For more information contact the ACRES Office and ask for ESOL Student Support information.

If you would like to learn English but are worried about the course costs, we may be able to help you providing that you are eligible for the course and have been resident in the UK for over a year. Please contact the ACRES office on 01825 761820 for further details.

Am I eligible for ESOL classes?
ESOL courses are open to all EU adults (16+) and non-EU adults providing they meet the eligibility criteria. Please contact the ACRES Office on 01825 761820 for more details.

What can I do afterwards?
You can continue your English studies at the next ESOL level or, for more advanced students, progress on to GCSE English.

How can I join a class?
If you are new to ACRES, you will need to be assessed before you join a class to make sure that it's the best class for you. Current students will not need to be assessed, but will need to contact the ACRES Office over the summer to enrol for September. Please note that we need minimum numbers for courses to run.

New classes will be beginning in September so if you would like to join us, contact the ACRES Office on 01825 761820.

Do you employ people who don’t have English as their first language?
ESOL in the Workplace are tailor-made courses to suit the specific English language needs of your business. Employees could access job-specific English classes either in the workplace or at your local college. For further details please telephone ACRES on 01825 761820 and ask for ESOL. Course costs will apply.

Planning to take the Life in the UK Citizenship Test?
If you are planning to take the Life in the UK online test then why not get in some practice first? If you are interested in a short 20 hour preparation course then contact us on 01825 761820 and ask for ESOL. Course costs will apply and students will need to have intermediate to advanced English skills.
