ACRES offers a wide range of beginners courses including French, German, Japanese and Spanish.
If you are more interested in learning more about culture and customs of France, Spain, Germany and China, then our Saturday workshops in Heathfield (22 November) will be of interest to you!
In addition to your traditional “long” (30 week) language courses, we are also offering some short courses (10 weeks or 2 Saturdays) in the form of our “Holiday courses”. If you just want to learn to get by, then the “Survival Kits” are the courses to look out for!
For those who already have some previous knowledge but need to brush up their skills or want to practise existing skills, there is an extensive selection of intermediate courses in various centres and varying times to suit everybody. We are also offering a more advanced “Increase your Fluency” course in Spanish at our Uckfield venue.
We place great emphasis on helping students to speak and understand the language through practical and relevant activities right from the start. We encourage students to fully participate in role plays, presentations, discussions and games.
Our aim is to create an informal learning environment in which learning is fun!
To make the language learning experience a valuable and successful one, students should be prepared to spend approximately 1-2 hours outside lesson time on revision and consolidation.
Once students have enrolled on a language course, they are entitled to attend one of the “How to Learn a Language” workshops free of charge. These will help with organising time for study, knowing where and how to find help and finding out about effective learning strategies. If you are not attending a language course with ACRES and would like to attend one of these workshops you can – for just £10!
If you need any help in choosing the appropriate course for you or would like more information, please telephone the ACRES Office on 01825 761820 and we will be happy to provide you with further details, or you can visit our website at www.acreslearning.org.uk.
Each course has an information sheet which gives further information. This will be sent to you automatically when you enrol. They are also available on request prior to enrolment. Alternatively, you can download them from our website at www.acreslearning.org.uk
A Guide to ACRES Language Levels
Beginners
This course is aimed at students who have no or only very little previous knowledge of the language. It offers the opportunity to learn and practise basic topics, such as personal information, asking the way, making purchases, etc. Some basic grammar will also be covered.
Beginners Plus
This course is aimed at students who have completed one year of study within an adult education setting (or equivalent), or completed a Beginners course last year. The course builds on the basic knowledge acquired previously, by learning more structures as well as improving understanding in a variety of practical situations (topics such as health, making arrangements, talking about daily routine, etc). Students will learn how to talk about the past and express opinions.
Intermediate
This course is aimed at students who have completed two years of study within an adult education setting (or equivalent), completed a Beginners Plus course last year or have some “rusty” knowledge from their schooldays. The course aims to consolidate structures and vocabulary learnt so far and to increase confidence in speaking. Work will focus on the full development of the four language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Intermediate Plus
This course is aimed at students who have completed three years of study within an adult education setting (or equivalent) or completed an Intermediate course last year. The course will broaden knowledge of grammar and vocabulary by introducing and practising more complex structures. At the same time there will be plenty of opportunity to improve speaking and listening skills and expand reading and writing skills.
Increase your Fluency
This course is aimed at students who have either completed four years of study within an adult education setting (or equivalent) or completed a GCSE or similar or an Intermediate Plus course last year. During the course, students have the opportunity to develop their conversational skills by widening their knowledge and understanding of complex language structures. Listening, reading and writing will be practised through a range of authentic materials.
