Course overview

Hand-building ceramics, from design to a finished product. Learn and explore the wonder and creativity that ceramics encompasses.
You will experiment with clay, techniques, decoration and glazes, a course to absorb and relax you.
The fee includes basic materials.
Where Uckfield College, Downsview Crescent, Uckfield, East Sussex, TN22 3DJ.
When Wednesday, 6:30pm - 9:00pm from 22nd September 2021 until 15th December 2021 for 10 weeks.

No class 27th October (Half term holiday) 10th & 15th November 2021.

This is an in-person course. In the event of restrictions being reintroduced and if the class is remaining in the venue, you will be informed of further safety measures. If the lessons cannot take place because the tutor has to isolate or in the event of government imposed restrictions or lockdowns, every effort will be made to reschedule the missed classes. If this is not possible we will refund the outstanding lessons.
Cost The full fee is £225.00. The concessionary fee is £143.00.


Additional Costs
Basic materials are included in the course fee. Should you require something specific for a project the tutor will advise you where to purchase. Additional materials may be available to purchase directly from the tutor. To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or text books until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date. Course fees over £133 can be paid in one single payment at enrolment or in instalments by Standing Order. Please contact the office for details.

You must not attend the class if you show signs or symptoms of Covid-19, are awaiting results of a PCR Covid test, have been in close contact with a Covid-19 patient within 14 days or anyone who has been advised to self isolate for any reason. Please inform the ACRES' office, who will advise the tutor.


All tutors, students and visitors are encouraged to participate in rapid lateral flow testing in the interest of everybody's safety, however, this is not a mandatory requirement. Test kits are readily available locally or from https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests

What you already need to know

No experience is required. All abilities are welcome.

What you will learn

Beginners will initially focus on developing their hand building skills. This knowledge will then be expanded by modelling and building a free standing, figurative or decorative piece.Those with more experience will work on project pieces.

How you will learn it

You will learn which clays will be appropriate for different tasks and how clay is manipulated to create different forms in ceramic design. The tutor will demonstrate various techniques, students will then have the opportunity to create their own pieces of work.

Before and after using any shared equipment, students will be asked to wash their hands.

Bring to the first session

- Pen or pencil and apron.
- During the first session, you will be advised on a list of tools that you may like to use during the course. Most of these can be found at home.
- Materials will be provided for small and medium-sized pieces of work.
- Larger items can be produced, and additional materials can be purchased from the tutor, or the tutor can advise where to buy clay and equipment if you choose to create large works of art. Speak to your tutor if you are unsure.

Extra study or practice

- You may wish to use a sketchbook at home to develop designs and ideas.
- Artists and Studio Potter research will expand your knowledge of the subject and may prompt areas for development in your 3D work.
