Develop your own individual artistic style and learn about the decision processes involved in taking an initial idea through to final piece of original artwork.
Course overview
This course will focus on developing your existing skills and knowledge of observational drawing to investigate your own individual artistic style or language. Belinda will expertly guide you through the decision processes, from initial idea or inspiration to final original artwork, always nurturing your love of drawing.

When
Monday, 10:00am - 12:00pm from 1st November 2021 until 29th November 2021 for 5 weeks.
This is an in-person course. In the event of restrictions being reintroduced and if the class is remaining in the venue, you will be informed of further safety measures. If the lessons cannot take place because the tutor has to isolate or in the event of government imposed restrictions or lockdowns, every effort will be made to reschedule the missed classes. If it is not possible to continue the course in the venue it will be continued online.
Cost
The full fee is £69.00.
The concessionary fee is £36.00.
Additional Costs
Please see list under "What do I need to bring to the first session". The tutor will advise of any other materials required at the first session. To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date. Course fees over £133 can be paid in one single payment at enrolment or in instalments by Standing Order. Please contact the office for details.
During the course
Specific Covid Considerations:
To ensure Safe Practice during practical sessions:
- Class numbers are reduced to allow students to space apart.
- Students should work at separate tables or desks.
- Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms.
- You are responsible for sanitising your own work space before and after each lesson, anti-bacterial wipes or spray will be provided by the tutor.
- Wearing a mask is a personal choice. Please respect the choices of your tutor and fellow students.
- Windows and doors left open to allow for room ventilation should not be adjusted by students.
- Sharing of equipment is discouraged, but if it is essential, please use the wipes / spray provided to clean between handling.
- Please make yourself aware of local guidance, particularly in community venues.
You must not attend the class if you show signs or symptoms of Covid-19, are awaiting results of a PCR Covid test, have been in close contact with a Covid-19 patient within 14 days or anyone who has been advised to self isolate for any reason. Please inform the ACRES' office, who will advise the tutor.
All tutors, students and visitors are encouraged to participate in rapid lateral flow testing in the interest of everybody's safety, however, this is not a mandatory requirement. Test kits are readily available locally or from https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests

What you already need to know
This course is for students who have either completed Drawing Workshops with Belinda Channer or have previous drawing experience and some knowledge of the formal aspects of drawing.
With our apologies, this course is not suitable for absolute beginners. For beginners, we would like to recommend
Introduction to Drawing and Painting
What you will learn
- How to develop a concept of interest and transfer it on the page or canvas.
- Experiment with different compositions, approaches, viewpoints and conditions to allow your ideas to evolve.
- How to use study sketches and experiment with different styles, for example, moving away from pure observational work to the more abstract.
- How to develop picture critiquing skills to see more and therefore inform and improve your own work.
- How to recognise gaps in knowledge and skills to make improvements.
- How to take a more proactive role in your learning and lead the development of your own artist's style or voice.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR OIL PAINTS.
How you will learn it
You will learn directly from your tutor and through tutor demonstrations, presentations, online resources and group discussion. You will have plenty of opportunities to develop your practical skills, and your tutor will give you guidance and feedback as you establish and undertake personal project work.
Padlet will be used to share online interactive support with information, images, examples, demonstrations and video links, and an online gallery for student work.
Bring to the first session
- A range of pencils 2b, 4b, 6b, 8b (three of these) and/or a mixed thickness box of charcoal,
- A putty rubber
- A standard eraser
- An A2 sketchbook (cartridge paper)
PLEASE NOTE: Students will be asked to bring in their own material/items to study and/or create their individual installations.
The tutor will advise you of any further materials required during the course. You are encouraged to arrive from 9:45 am, fifteen minutes in advance of the session start time to allow time to set up your composition and workstation.
Extra study or practice
Drawing between sessions is not compulsory but it may help you to practise skills covered in class.
