Art Appreciation; 17th Century Baroque - Italy (BE09U11A)
Course overview
We will explore the art and architecture that developed during the Counter-Reformation in Italy, a period in which the Catholic Church sought to re-establish its authority to oppose the growth of Protestantism. To this end, the Church adopted an artistic program promoting art that was clear, persuasive and powerful. It called for a new kind of visual representation which was dramatic, realistic in depiction and clear in narrative so that it could be easily understood and strongly felt by the common people in order to encourage piety as well as inspiring awe in the Catholic Church. Baroque ushered in a new era for painting, sculpture and architecture and we will be looking at some of the key works of this period. We will also be investigating the profound cultural and social changes that emerged in Italy at this time as a way of understanding the significance of these artworks.

What you already need to know

What you will learn
Through works by Caravaggio, Bernini, Pietro da Cortona and others, we will explore how art in 17th Century Italy became a tool not only to instruct but to inspire the faithful and an essential means to demonstrate the wealth and power of the Church. Whether through shocking realism, dynamic movement or glorious ornamentation, we will examine how these artists were prompted to experiment with new and more direct means of engaging the viewer. We will investigate the major changes that transformed the religious and political landscape of Europe during this time period and the extraordinary advances in philosophy and science that had enormous influence on artistic production in the Italian Baroque era.
How you will learn it
Through use of art, presentations and literature, Maya will guide you to look deeper into works of art and explore the history, social and cultural context that played a part in the development of these movements.
However, it is through interaction, discussion and activities that you will truly be able to discover your own response to these truly remarkable artworks.

Maya studied History of Art at St Andrews University - Western Art spanning the eras from the Byzantine to the Contemporary and specialised in 20th Century art. She has been teaching GCSE and A Level students how to respond and analyse form, style, techniques and meaning through the investigation of various artworks from across the globe and from different periods and also how they interrelate and influence each other. Maya believes that it is vital to view art through its social and cultural contexts, to recognise its significance and the value of its qualities in order to fully interpret and appreciate it. She is enjoying sharing her passion with adult learners.
