Course overview
An introduction to drawing in a friendly class where you can gain new skills and confidence. You will build a fundamental knowledge of drawing accurately, demonstrating your observational skills and how to create a good composition. You will learn about the core skills of art by exploring observation, tone, form, colour and composition by getting stuck in with pencils, eventually creating a paint effect. The course will include personal projects, allowing you the time to develop and interpret your own creative ideas.

Monday, 10:00am - 12:00pm from 31st October 2022 until 5th December 2022 for 6 weeks.

The full fee is £92.00.
The concessionary fee is £50.00.
What you already need to know
This course is for complete beginners or those who have some experience of drawing and painting and are looking to refresh their knowledge of basic skills.
What you will learn
You will gain confidence in observational drawing, looking at tone, colour theory and composition. You will also have the opportunity to experiment.
Topics covered will include:
- Ways to represent tone in drawing
- Ways to construct composition
- Colour theory
- Mixing different pallets
- Blending techniques
By the end of the course, you will have produced a range of pictures, that will be a record of your own personal development. You will have the basic knowledge to enable you to get started with your own projects at home or you may choose to continue learning and developing your skills on the next drawing course.
How you will learn it
- Tutor-led tuition and demonstration
- Hands-on practice of skills
- Exploration and discussion of other artists and techniques used to achieve their finished works.
- Self, tutor and group reviews and feedback using a secure online platform (Padlet) to share resources and track your progress
Bring to the first session
- Watercolour pencils 12-36. Examples are; Faber & Castell/ Derwent/ WH Smiths have good quality pigments in their pencils.
- Drawing pencils - different grades 2H, H, B, 2B, 4B, 6B
- A3 sketchbook or paper 200 - 300 gsm or heavier
- An eraser
- A 30 cm ruler
- A water container and pots
- Masking tape
- A blending stump (optional)
- A board for taping work to (optional)
- A table easel (optional) ACRES have a few available to loan for your lessons, please ask at enrolment.
A handy optional item would be an A3 portfolio to keep your work together but a large bag will do.
To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date. Please contact the office for details.
Extra study or practice
Some preparation and research learning about selected artists and their techniques will be useful. Your tutor will give you pointers and links each week.
You may wish to spend time at home practising skills and techniques between classes.
