The Fundamentals of Painting (HE09F02D)
Course overview
This is a practical painting programme for students of all abilities.
The course engages students in exercises designed to develop both theoretical and experiential knowledge of the fundamentals of painting.
The course will initially focus on colour and how it is used, often in contrast, to signify and produce affect and emotion, and then deploy it in different modes of representation (different observational registers). In the last section of the course students will be asked to explore paint as matter; experimenting with various painting techniques; wet into wet paint, glazes, scumbles, impasto, perhaps even encaustic. Students will produce abstract, observational and figurative work over the duration of the course.

No classes on 4th & 11th April (Spring break)
Cost
The full fee is £200.00.
The concessionary fee is £105.00.
What you already need to know
This course is for all-comers; for beginners and those with some experience of drawing who wish to refresh their knowledge and broaden their practice of painting.
What you will learn
This course is about building confidence in painting. You will learn about tone, colour theories, texture and composition, but in addition you can expect the following:
- Diversity At the end of the course your portfolio will contain a range of diverse paintings; diverse subject matter in diverse modes and using diverse mediums.
- Colour Gain appreciation of colour theory and the expressive dimension of colour.
- Experiment Discover the different ways we can use paint and inks to represent a scene.
- Materials Become conscious of painting as engagement with and manipulation of a range of materials and matter at different phases of a painting to produce different effects.
- Audience Understand that art, in the main, is made for another person to view and so is composed of signs, symbols and codes that will give meaning to the viewer.

If you wish to make Tuesdays your Day of Art, we offer a 20% reduction on the 2nd course, to students attending The Fundamentals of Drawing & The Fundamentals of Painting on the same day.
How you will learn it
In a small, relaxed class you will learn through a variety of methods:
- Tutor led discussion and lectures
- Tutor demonstration as a group and individually
- Practical application and exercises
- Group and tutor feedback at the end of each session
Bring to the first session
- A1 drawing paper
- A1 drawing board
- Masking or gummed tape
- A range of brushes e.g. a round, a rigger, 2 x flats of different sizes, a filibert and an angle (see below for definitions
- A set of acrylic paints (some art stores offer paint and paintbrush starter kits which are good value)
- A palette of some kind (can be wooden, a sheet of acrylic or simply a ceramic plate)
- An easel - ACRES have a few available to loan for your lessons, please ask at enrolment.
- A portfolio or large bag to keep your work together
As the course progresses you will need to bring in other materials including oil paints and brush cleaners but wait to be advised by the tutor.
To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date.
Extra study or practice
It is recommended that you spend time at home practising skills and techniques from the classes. In addition, you may be asked to do light preparatory research for upcoming classes, but this won't be onerous.

Terry is a new tutor to ACRES
Tutor Bio: Terry Rosenberg did his undergraduate studies at Ruskin School of Fine Art in Oxford and followed this with a Masters in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Over the years, he has taught at different institutions including the RCA, the AA, Chelsea, Goldsmiths, the City Lit and numerous other FE and AE colleges. He has taught courses, both theoretical and practical, art and design, at all levels from Pre-foundation and BTec courses to Master's degrees and has also supervised PhDs. In the last 25 years Terry worked at Goldsmiths full time. Alongside the teaching, Terry did research that covered both theory and practice; writing and editing papers, articles, books and working with colleagues designing and making critical design objects and environments. Terry retired from academia in July 2020, determined to find space and time to reclaim his art practice. He has been producing artwork since, but discovering how much he missed teaching he is looking forward to delivering some adult classes through ACRES.

Definition of brush types
- Flat: for spreading paint quickly and evenly over a surface. They will have longer hairs than their Bright counterpart
- Bright: shorter than flats. Flat brushes with short stiff bristles, good for driving paint into the weave of a canvas in thinner paint applications, as well as thicker painting styles like impasto work
- Filbert: flat brushes with domed ends. They allow good coverage and the ability to perform some detail work.
- Fan: for blending broad areas of paint
- Angle: like the filbert, these are versatile and can be applied in both general painting application as well as some detail work
- Mop: a larger format brush with a rounded edge for broad soft paint application as well as for getting thinner glazes over existing drying layers of paint without damaging lower layers to protect the paintbrush
- Rigger: longer hair than other types of brush and is used for painting straight lines in oil, acrylic or watercolour
