Course overview

This is Part 2 of a practical drawing programme for students of all abilities.
The programme consists of 2 courses, each of which can be a stand-alone course but in conjunction may be used together to build a more substantive understanding of the fundamentals of drawing.

Both course parts engage students in exercises designed to develop their confidence and abilities in drawing generally, while, at the same time, focussing their attention on addressing and understanding different foundational processes and attendant actions involved in the making of a drawing; essentially how we apply different aspects of perceptual activity to engage with different forms of depiction in the creation of meaningful drawings.

Part 1 Embodied Drawing HE09F01B (Nov-Feb) - the focus is on how one uses one's senses, brain and body in the production of a drawing. You will be introduced among other things, to gestural drawing, continuous line, line drawing, vectors of analysis, measurement, tonal progression (in observational drawing)
Part 2 Projection and Touch HE09F01D (starting in February) you will be introduced to texture, expressive mark making, drawing systems, structural analysis, constructed drawing (from abstraction and imagined scenes to landscape and still life).

What you already need to know

This is a mixed ability course and focuses less on previous experience than mindset.
Not all artists want to be constrained by what is expected of them.
This course encourages you to be ambitious in what you want to achieve.
Whether you are a beginner or have some experience of drawing, buy some big paper and come along to broaden your ideas and your drawing skills.

What you will learn

This course is about building confidence in drawing. You will learn about tone, colour theories and composition, but in addition you can expect the following:

A Day of Art - Introductory two Course Discount
In the afternoon Terry teaches The Fundamentals of Painting.
If you wish to make Tuesdays your Day of Art, we offer a 20% reduction on the 2nd course, to students attending The Fundamentals of Drawing & The Fundamentals of Painting on the same day.

How you will learn it

In a small, relaxed class you will learn through a variety of methods:

Bring to the first session

As the course progresses you will need to bring in further materials such as a range of drawing pencils, black ink pens, white chalk and different drawing paper, but wait to be advised by the tutor.

To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date.

Extra study or practice

It is recommended that you spend time at home practising skills and techniques from the classes. In addition, you may be asked to do light preparatory research for upcoming classes, but this won't be onerous.

How to enrol

This course will be open for new enrolments in December 2022. Register your interest and a member of the ACRES team will be in touch when enrolments are open. (Please note a priority booking window will be offered to existing students).

Terry is a new tutor to ACRES
Tutor Bio: Terry Rosenberg did his undergraduate studies at Ruskin School of Fine Art in Oxford and followed this with a Masters in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Over the years, he has taught at different institutions including the RCA, the AA, Chelsea, Goldsmiths, the City Lit and numerous other FE and AE colleges. He has taught courses, both theoretical and practical, art and design, at all levels from Pre-foundation and BTec courses to Master's degrees and has also supervised PhDs. In the last 25 years Terry worked at Goldsmiths full time. Alongside the teaching, Terry did research that covered both theory and practice; writing and editing papers, articles, books and working with colleagues designing and making critical design objects and environments. Terry retired from academia in July 2020, determined to find space and time to reclaim his art practice. He has been producing artwork since, but discovering how much he missed teaching he is looking forward to delivering some adult classes through ACRES.
