Art Appreciation: Expressionism - Creative Impulse and Emotional Experience (C)REMOVE FROM PLUS DO NOT use - keep as reference (BE09Z10E)

Course overview

We will explore Expressionist art with a focus on the works of three groups that developed in Germany at the start of the 20th Century, Die Brucke, Der Blaue Reiter and Neue Sachlichkeit as well as a look at Expressionist artists working in Austria. These artists sought to oppose the established social order and move further away from the accepted conventions in art by expressing profound emotional experience through their art. We will be looking at the social and historical context in which these movements were born and the pre-war and post-war period in Europe that led these artists to seek first the depiction of authentic emotion through heightened colour and simplified form through to adapting the new art form to highlight social injustice and political hypocrisy.

What you already need to know

No particular prior knowledge is needed just an enthusiasm for the subject. This is a continuation of a course that started in September 2023 but you do not need to have attended a previous course as each topic will be studied independently. Please contact the ACRES office to enquire about spaces if you have not previously enrolled on this course.

What you will learn

We will be looking at the origins of Expressionism through artists such as Van Gogh and Munch. We will explore the radical simplification of form and use of vivid colours to reflect subjective experience in works by artists like Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. We will also investigate the new role of the artist to expose the corruption and decay of society in the Weimar Republic in works by artists such as Otto Dix and George Grosz. Through surveying the history and the artists, discussing the artworks and their significance, we will examine how these artists came to reconcile the opposing concerns of intellect and emotion.

How you will learn it

Through the use of art, presentations and literature, Maya will guide you to look deeper into works of art and explore the history, social and cultural context that played a part in the development of these movements. However, it is through interaction, discussion and activities that you will truly be able to discover your own response to these truly remarkable artworks.
