Course overview
Enjoy a day with an experienced tutor guiding you through 'visible mending' techniques that will enable you to creatively repair or upcycle your garments. Learn skills that will give you the means to repair both woven and knitted fabrics, and embellish them with some simple hand stitching skills.

Saturday, 10:00am - 4:00pm on 11th May 2024 for 1 day.

The full fee is £49.00.
What you already need to know
This course is aimed at beginners and those with some experience in hand sewing.
What you will learn
You can expect to learn:
- How to repair a woven fabric using techniques such as applique or Sashiko.
- How to mend a knitted fabric using techniques such as needle felting or knitting.
- An introduction to basic hand sewing stitches and embroidery techniques.
- How to create a decorative patch using these stitches and other embellishments eg. buttons.
- Tips and skills to help you upcycle your clothes or charity shop bargains!
How you will learn it
- Tutor demonstrations.
- Group and individual tuition.
- Practical application of knowledge.
- This is a relaxed workshop where you will be encouraged to share your ideas within the group.
Bring to the first session
- Any items that you would like advice on how to mend or upcycle - you can work on these during the workshop if you wish.
- A basic sewing kit - if you own one, please don't purchase one specially - (large and small scissors, pins, tape measure, stitch picker, fabric chalk/marker, hand sewing needles, hand sewing threads)
- Fabric remnants for using as patches - these could be items of clothing that you are happy to recycle - please note that Mary will provide some pieces of fabric that can be used to make samples during the workshop, but you may wish to bring your own fabric scraps to personalise your work.
- Notebook and pen for taking notes.
To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date.
Extra study or practice
You may choose to do additional work or continue with your making at home if you wish to do so, but this is optional.
