Brush Up Your Maths for GCSE (Online) (OL02Q85F)

This is an ONLINE 4 week introduction to Maths GCSE with the focus on preparing you to return to study and revise basic skills ready for Foundation GCSE.

Course overview

This course aims to refresh your current maths skills and boost confidence in your current abilities should you wish to progress to taking a Foundation level GCSE. Useful skills and links to maths websites will be shared with you along with techniques to help build up good study habits and give yourself a good foundation from which to achieve your goal.

When Tuesday, 6:30pm - 9:00pm from 25th June 2024 until 16th July 2024 for 4 weeks.

What you already need to know

You will need to be working at or achieved functional skills maths level 1 or above and have a basic understanding of number operations (additional, subtraction, multiplication and division), fractions, decimals and percentages.

What you will learn

In readiness for brushing up your Maths skills and preparing you for taking a GCSE Foundation Maths course in an academic year, you will develop study skills that will help you to prepare and feel confident studying:

- Four operations with negative numbers (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication)

- Recognising equivalent fractions, decimals, percentages, ordering and comparing these using inequalities

- Intro to Mathswatch and other online independent study programmes

- Review your mental mathematics

How you will learn it

You will study in small class of students online, in group, pair and individual formations, using a range of physical and online resources. Sessions are relaxed and aim to ease you into studying Maths at Foundation level GCSE.

Bring to the first session

Please bring pen, pencil and notepad to the first lesson.

Extra study or practice

It is recommended that you spend 1 - 2 hours a week doing home study to practise what you have learnt in class. You are also encouraged to refresh and practise your times tables.
This will help you to develop good study habits in preparation for the Foundation GCSE when you will be expected to do 3 - 4 hours of home study per week.

We will send you an enrolment pack. The pack includes a short assessment to establish your level. Please return the pack in the free-post envelope provided as soon as possible.
You will then be invited to an online 'meet and greet' with a tutor to discuss the best route for you to achieve your maths goals.

Additional Course Information

This course is free if you do not hold an A*- C or below a grade 4 or equivalent Maths Foundation GCSE.
For the Foundation GCSE course you will be provided with a course book and exam specification calculator.
Please do not buy anything until advised by your tutor.

This course will be taught online via the Google Meet video platform. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in any online sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time. You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or iPad) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.

You may decide that you would like to create a separate email account for your online learning prior to the start of the course and let the ACRES' Office and your tutor know the address. This will be more secure and also allow you to share your email address with other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.
