A short four week course that provides a good foundation for studying the full GCSE English course which starts in September 2024

Course overview

This course aims to refresh your current English skills and boost confidence in your abilities should you wish to progress to studying GCSE English. You will be taught techniques to help build up good study habits and confidence in your own learning and abilities and give yourself a good foundation from which to achieve your goal.

When Wednesday, 6:45pm - 9:00pm from 26th June 2024 until 17th July 2024 for 4 weeks.

What you already need to know

You will need to have a good standard of literacy to enable you to complete written tasks and read and understand the course texts.

What you will learn

In readiness for brushing up your English skills and preparing you for taking a GCSE English course in an academic year, you will develop study skills that will help you to prepare and feel confident studying:

How you will learn it

Classes are small, informal and friendly, aimed at easing you into studying GCSE English. You will learn from a variety of teaching methods including; tutor explanations, discussions, small group activities and writing tasks. You will be given additional work to complete at home which will enhance your learning.

Extra study or practice

It is recommended that you spend 1 - 2 hours a week doing home study to practise what you have learnt in class. You are also encouraged to read daily, trying out new types of reading material.
This will help you to develop good study habits in preparation for the GCSE when you will be expected to do 3 - 4 hours of home study per week.

We will send you an enrolment pack. The pack includes a short assessment to establish your level. Please return the pack in the free-post envelope provided as soon as possible. You will then be invited to an online 'meet and greet' with a tutor to discuss the best route for you to achieve your English goals.

Additional Course Information

This course is free if you do not hold an A*- C or equivalent English GCSE. Books and texts will be provided but students may choose to purchase their own copies of books. Please do not buy anything until advised by your tutor.

Future steps beyond ACRES

Some colleges and universities now offer an equivalency exam for adults who do not have a GCSE English. Completing an NCFE L2 qualification will equip learners to demonstrate their literacy for further study. Call us or discuss with your tutor the different level courses available in September 2024.
